1. Project Title
  • Oil System Upgrade ($2.8M)
  1. Project Summary
  • The project involved the replacement of an ageing oil stripping and absorption system within an operational production facility.
  • The existing oil stripper, absorber and associated pipework were predominantly manufactured from carbon steel and were exhibiting significant corrosion.
  • DMD developed the design for a new stainless-steel system to improve long-term reliability, reduce future corrosion risk and bring the installation in line with current engineering best practice.
  1. Client / Sector
  • Animal Feed Manufacturing
  1. Project Location
  • North West England
  1. Client Challenge
  • The new equipment and associated pipework had to be installed within an existing, partially redundant area of the operational plant.
  • The available space was heavily constrained and required extensive enabling and remedial works before the new system could be installed.
  • The design also had to integrate with existing plant infrastructure while maintaining production and minimising disruption to ongoing operations.
  1. DMD Scope of Work
  • Laser scanning and site surveys
  • Targeted as-built verification of the existing plant
  • Identification and verification of process and utility tie-in points
  • Equipment and piping layout development
  • Piping design and detailing
  • Civil and structural design
  • Secondary steelwork design
  • Enabling and demolition packages
  • Multidisciplinary design coordination
  1. Engineering Disciplines
  • Piping
  • Civil
  • Structural
  1. Project Delivery Approach
  • A detailed laser scan and site verification exercise was completed to establish an accurate representation of the existing installation.
  • Layout and routing option studies were undertaken to determine the most practical arrangement within the available space.
  • The developing design was reviewed through structured 30%, 60% and 90% model reviews.
  • Operational, access, maintenance and installation constraints were considered throughout the design process.
  • Enabling work packages were developed to allow preparatory works to be completed while the plant remained operational.
  • Shutdown activities were reduced by maximising the amount of work that could be safely completed in advance.
