- Project Title
- As-Built P&ID development and 3D Model
- Project Summary
- The project involved the progressive development of a complete suite of site P&IDs and a coordinated 3D as-built model for an operational manufacturing facility.
- The work covered the production hall, mixing rooms, tank farms, on/off loading bays, boiler house and the wider site infrastructure.
- DMD combined laser scanning, site surveys, engineering walkdowns and detailed draughting to establish an accurate record of the existing installation.
- The project progressed beyond initial model creation to include P&ID completion, system tagging, model validation and physical valve identification on site.
- Sector
- Industrial Manufacturing
- Process Plant and Production Facilities
- Project Location
- North West England
- Client Challenge
- The client required reliable and coordinated engineering records for an established operational facility where existing plant information was incomplete or required verification.
- P&IDs needed to be developed across several interconnected production areas while accurately representing continuations and tie-ins between systems.
- The 3D model needed to capture different areas at appropriate levels of detail, balancing site-wide spatial awareness with higher accuracy in critical process areas.
- Restricted access, insulated pipework and high-temperature working environments created additional surveying and validation challenges.
- The resulting information needed to provide a dependable basis for future plant modifications, maintenance activities and engineering projects.
- DMD Scope of Work

- Site surveys and engineering walkdowns
- Existing-condition verification
- Development of a full suite of as-built P&IDs
- Development of a site-wide 3D as-built model

- Piping
- Engineering Surveying
- Project Delivery Approach
- Initial laser scans and site surveys were completed to establish the physical arrangement of the existing facility.
- The model was developed using a tiered level-of-detail strategy, allowing critical process areas to be modelled in greater detail than general buildings and infrastructure.
- P&ID surveys were undertaken area by area, covering equipment, pipework, valves, instruments and process connections.
- A dedicated site-based resource was used to progressively develop and validate the P&IDs and 3D model.
- Final validation included physical valve tagging, supported by a client representative acting as the site acceptor during walkdowns.
