1. Project Title
  • Carbon Filter Installation and Relief Stack Modification
  1. Project Summary
  • The project involved the design development of a new carbon filtration system to be installed between the existing Cyclone Fan and the associated relief stack to atmosphere.
  • The objective was to integrate the new carbon filter into the existing operating plant while retaining the required process flow path and accommodating the surrounding infrastructure.
  • DMD was appointed to deliver the piping, mechanical, civil and structural design elements, with EC&I works undertaken separately by the client or other appointed parties.
  • The design included modifications to the existing pipework and ductwork, development of the new equipment arrangement, supporting infrastructure and the civil foundation required for the filter installation.
  1. Sector
  • Industrial Process Manufacturing
  • Air Emissions and Filtration
  1. Project Location
  • North West England
  1. Client Challenge
  • The client required a new carbon filter to be incorporated into an existing relief system between the cyclone fan and the atmospheric discharge stack.
  • The new equipment had to be positioned within an established operational area containing existing pipework, ductwork, structures and plant infrastructure.
  • Existing pipework and duct routes required modification to accommodate the filter while maintaining a practical and coordinated flow path.
  • The arrangement needed to provide suitable support for the new and modified systems, together with safe access for operation, inspection and maintenance.
  • Piping, mechanical and structural interfaces had to be coordinated with EC&I works being delivered by the client or other third parties.
  1. DMD Scope of Work
  • Laser scanning and point-cloud data processing
  • Site surveys and existing-condition verification
  • Development of the equipment and ductwork routing
  • Redesign of existing ductwork to accommodate the new installation
  • Mechanical integration of the carbon filter with the existing cyclone fan and relief stack
  • Secondary steelwork and supporting infrastructure design
  • Civil foundation and equipment-base design
  1. Engineering Disciplines
  • Piping
  • Civil
  • Structural
  1. Project Delivery Approach
  • A laser scan of the project area was completed and processed to establish an accurate record of the existing installation.
  • Site surveys were undertaken to verify existing equipment, pipework, ductwork, structural interfaces and available installation space.
  • Existing systems were redesigned where required to accommodate the new filtration equipment.
  • Pipe and duct support requirements were developed alongside the routing to ensure the proposed arrangement could be safely supported.
  • The civil base and structural elements were coordinated with the equipment loads and proposed installation arrangement.
